Christmas time arrived in Vienna
"Advent, Advent, a little light is burning. First one, then two, then three, then four, then the Christkind stands at the door."
This little poem accompanied me since I was a child and still means to me that Christmas is coming soon now and that the coming weeks will be full of shining lights, cookie scent, Christmas decorations, atmospheric music and lots more.
For today I have prepared a small compilation of already written blog posts by me about this very special time in Vienna. Get ready for a lot of inspiration.
Well known in the Christmas season in Vienna are of course all the Christmas markets, especially the ones at Rathausplatz, Viennese Christkindlmarkt, Spittelberg or Schönbrunn. But in addition, there are also smaller, more unconventional ones, the you should not miss. More you can find in "How Vienna will enchant you with Christmas spirit in the weeks to come" and "Discover facets of Vienna full of atmosphere during Christmas time".
Warm yourself with coffee and tea
But it are not only the Christmas markets that give Vienna its special luster, but also the many atmospheric Christmas illuminations in the city. It is therefore really worth strolling around the city and absorb all the impressions. But lots of walking might make you of course a bit hungry and and a bit cooling. So how about coffee and cake or a fine cup of tea?
Vienna is worldwide known for its special coffee house culture (this was even declared as an UNESCO heritage) and therefore you can find throughout the whole city, no matter where you are, countless beautiful and cozy cafés that just invite to linger. Do you want to know more about the Viennese coffeehouse culture? Then flip to the book "Kaffeehäuser in Wien: Ein Führer durch eine Wiener Institution. Klassiker, moderne Cafés, Konditoreien, Coffeeshops", which really makes you want more. Or how about a neat conversation "Vienna coffeehouse conversations"?
But there are not only the coffeehouses that wait for you with their specialities to warm you on cold days, but also many tea houses where you can enjoy a large selection of fine teas in a pleasant atmosphere. But find more about them in "A fine cup of tea"
Are you still looking for a very special gift that you will only get in Vienna? How about an "Original Viennese snow globe" manufactured with love here in Hernals?
And now to my all time favourite list of things that under no circumstances may be missing in the holiday season:
- An Advent calendar with chocolate
- Reading once again, "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens
- The film "Love Actually" (Christian already knows this and does not grumble for one evening full of love and passion)
- Making those special cookies with the recipe of my grandmother
And if you want to take a break from all the pre-Christmas hustle and bustle, then head to the Therme Wien. Relax there as long as you want in the hot springs.
I wish you a wonderful holiday season,
Greetings from the Appartements Ferchergasse
PS .: One more book suggestion I have for you "The Christmas Mystery" by Jostein Gaarder. Especially with children, the 24 stories are a beautiful, philosophical preparation for Christmas.
