\"\"Viennese coffee-house culture has been on UNESCO\u2019s list of intangible cultural heritage since 2011 \u2013 and you feel it the moment you open the door: little marble tables, Thonet chairs, rustling newspapers, a waiter making his friendly-grumpy way between the tables. Here, as the saying goes, you consume time and space, and only the coffee shows up on the bill. <\/p>\n

You\u2019ve probably already heard of the truly famous houses \u2013 and there are often long queues outside them. We\u2019d rather show you the ones the Viennese sit in themselves. <\/p>\n

Our favourite classics<\/h2>\n

Four houses where time has stood still in the loveliest way:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • Caf\u00e9 Sperl<\/strong> (Gumpendorfer Stra\u00dfe, 6th district): wood panelling, a billiard table, the famous Sperl Torte \u2013 an embodiment of the Viennese coffee house since 1880.<\/li>\n
  • Caf\u00e9 Jelinek<\/strong> (Otto-Bauer-Gasse, 6th district): small, creaky, with an iron stove and home-made Gugelhupf. A snug little insider tip, much loved by locals. <\/li>\n
  • Caf\u00e9 Hawelka (Dorotheergasse, 1st district): the legendary artists\u2019 caf\u00e9, dim and cult-status. In the evening, the famous Buchteln (sweet buns) come fresh from the kitchen. <\/li>\n
  • Caf\u00e9 Pr\u00fcckel<\/strong> (by the Stubentor): 1950s charm rather than imperial splendour \u2013 wonderful for sitting, reading and people-watching for hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

    And right here in the west?<\/h2>\n

    Around Hernals and the neighbouring districts, there are small, honest neighbourhood caf\u00e9s with no tourist crush, too. Which ones are especially lovely right now, we\u2019d rather tell you in person \u2013 just ask us when you arrive. <\/p>\n

    A quick word on ordering<\/h2>\n

    So you feel right at home: a Melange is the Viennese answer to a cappuccino; a \u201eGro\u00dfer Brauner\u201c comes with a little milk; a \u201eVerl\u00e4ngerter\u201c is lengthened with water; and an Einsp\u00e4nner is a mocha with lots of Schlagobers (that\u2019s our word for whipped cream) in a glass. A glass of water is traditionally always served alongside. And don\u2019t worry \u2013 nobody here will rush you. <\/p>\n

    Take your time, leaf through a newspaper, gaze out the window. That\u2019s exactly what these houses are for.
