Vienna\u2019s Christmas markets have a long history; as early as 1842, the first market was held at Platz Am Hof and became the \u201cChristkindlmarkt.\u201d Today, there are numerous such markets throughout the city. We\u2019ll show you the classic favorites<\/a> that you shouldn\u2019t miss during your visit. <\/p>\n

Town Hall Square \u2013 The Big Picture<\/h2>\n

Every year since 1975, the square in front of Vienna City Hall has been transformed into Vienna\u2019s most famous Christmas market\u2014one of the largest and most impressive Christmas markets in Europe, with well over 150 stalls. A huge Christmas tree, donated each year by a different Austrian state, dominates the scene, with a large nativity scene at its base. In the evenings, brass band music often fills the air, and on Advent weekends, choirs sing in the neighboring City Hall. <\/p>\n

Sch\u00f6nbrunn \u2013 Imperial Charm<\/h2>\n

Set against the magnificent backdrop of Sch\u00f6nbrunn Palace, Advent takes on a particularly imperial air. Arts and crafts, an ice-skating rink, curling lanes, and a children\u2019s program featuring a carousel and a miniature train make this market a full-day outing\u2014and it usually stays open well into January. <\/p>\n

Spittelberg \u2013 the most romantic alleyway experience<\/h2>\n

Right in the heart of the 7th district, among the winding Biedermeier streets of Spittelberg, the atmosphere is especially cozy. Handcrafted goods instead of mass-produced items, punch instead of the hustle and bustle\u2014here, you\u2019ll find yourself strolling rather than pushing your way through the crowd.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

Freyung & Am Hof \u2013 the roots of it all<\/h2>\n

If you want to get a feel for history, head to Freyung: The old-Viennese Christmas market there and at the nearby Platz Am Hof takes you back to the beginnings of Vienna\u2019s Christmas market tradition. It\u2019s more tranquil than Rathausplatz, but just as atmospheric. <\/p>\n

The Winter Market at Riesenradplatz<\/h2>\n

For a cheerful end to your market stroll, the Prater is well worth a visit: against the backdrop of the Giant Ferris Wheel, you\u2019ll find punch, hot chocolate, and entertainment for the whole family\u2014and this market is usually open well into the first few days of January.<\/p>\n

Good to know<\/h2>\n

Admission to the traditional markets is free; a glass of punch or mulled wine usually costs around 5 to 6 euros (plus a deposit for the cup). Most markets open in mid-November and close shortly before or after Christmas, while the ones at Sch\u00f6nbrunn and the Prater run into January. One more thing to keep in mind: Not every market you might remember from previous years will be taking place again this year\u2014locations and opening hours change from season to season, so it\u2019s worth taking a quick look at the current schedule before you visit<\/a>. <\/p>\n
