The everyday basics
For your daily shopping, you’ll find everything within a few minutes’ walk of the Ferchergasse: several supermarkets (such as Billa, Spar, Hofer or Lidl), bakeries for fresh rolls, a pharmacy for emergencies, and drugstores like dm or Bipa for all those little things you tend to need.
The high street around the corner
The heart of the neighbourhood is the Hernalser Hauptstraße with Elterleinplatz – shops, bakers and small eateries line up one after another here. A short stroll is well worth it, and you can run your errands along the way.
For fresh produce and flair
If you like things more colourful: just over in neighbouring Ottakring lies the Brunnenmarkt, one of Vienna’s largest street markets. Here you’ll find fresh fruit and vegetables, cheese, olives and all sorts of specialities – and on the adjoining Yppenplatz you can round off your shopping with a coffee. A little piece of Vienna to taste and take in.
And every Saturday just around the corner you find the Alszeilenmarkt with many local specialities.
A tip about Sundays
In Austria, most shops are closed on Sundays – which sometimes surprises guests. So it’s best to plan your shopping for Saturday. If you do run short on a Sunday, the shops at the larger train stations come to the rescue, as they stay open then too.
