A long conversation with Michael Bauer-Leeb from  Weitsicht – Büro für zukunftsfähige Wirtschaft about sustainability inspired me to put together a good overview of where you can get regional, organic, and sustainable food in the immediate vicinity because there are a few options where you will find it.

The little specialists

Three smaller shops are well distributed over Hernals, so you are supplied with fine things no matter where you are.

Just around the corner from our apartments, on Hernalser Hauptstrasse, next to the pharmacy, you will find Christof Fink’s shop: Fink’s Gold. Excellent specialties focused on Austria, fresh bread, pastries, sausage, cheese, and organic fruit and vegetables. The selection is impressive. And at lunch, Christof spoils you with freshly cooked food.

Further outside, you will find the Dornbacher Grätzl-Greissler, lovingly run by Desiree Demmel-Ebinger. Here you will find everything you need for everyday shopping in excellent quality.

You will pass the Helene farm shop if you walk further into town from us. Which, as the name suggests, focuses on a farmer’s offer. From fruit, vegetables, and wine to bread and pastries. The things are simply tasty, regional, and sustainable.

The market

At the Alszeilemarkt, you can buy fruit, vegetables, bread, and much more from the region every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Whether it’s vegetables from an organic farm, meat from a direct marketer in Styria, delicious potatoes from Lower Austria, or the 17er beer straight from Hernals. The selection is awe-inspiring.

The supermarkets

You will now find a good range of organic goods and regional groceries in all supermarkets. See the seals such as Bio Austria and Fairtrade, and you’ve found the right food.

Denn’s Biomarkt has a unique position. Because at Denn’s, as the name suggests, all products are organic. So you don’t have to worry about whether it’s organic. The nearest Denn’s is also very close by.

As you can see, it is straightforward to shop consciously and sustainably in our area. And if you have any questions, feel free to contact Christian and me (Stephanie) at any time.
