Vienna has a reputation for being pricey – and yes, a slice of Sachertorte in a city-centre café comes at a price. But you know what? Some of the loveliest sides of this city cost nothing at all. You just need to know where to look. And that’s exactly what we’re here for.
So here are our favourite free tips for your stay – from plenty of greenery to culture for nothing, all the way to a walk that’s really a little city tour in disguise.
Out into the fresh air
Vienna’s parks are a gift – and they don’t cost a cent. In the Stadtpark, a golden Johann Strauß keeps you company; in the Volksgarten, thousands of roses bloom in summer; and the Burggarten is a quiet oasis right in the bustle. A little further out, the sweeping palace gardens of Schönbrunn are made for a stroll (entry to the park is free – only the zoo and the Gloriette cost extra). And if it’s water, meadows and room to breathe you’re after, the Donauinsel and the green Prater with its long main avenue belong to walkers, cyclists and picnickers – completely free.
Culture for free
You don’t need to spend a fortune to experience Vienna’s art and history:
- Everyone under 19 gets into all of Austria’s federal museums for free – think the Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Albertina or the Natural History Museum. A real win for families.
- The Wien Museum at Karlsplatz is free at all times for anyone under 19 – and free for everyone on the first Sunday of each month.
- Vienna’s 23 district museums (Bezirksmuseen) are generally free. Our own Bezirksmuseum Hernals is one of them – a charming look into the history of the very neighbourhood you’re staying in.
- Always free, too, is the National Bank’s Money Museum, and the House of Austrian History lets you in free on Thursday evenings.
My tip: keep some ID handy as proof of age for the „under-19“ offers.
Just wander the city – the loveliest tour is free
The best thing about Vienna costs nothing anyway: simply setting off on foot. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and even a walk from St. Stephen’s Cathedral (you can step into the main nave for free) along the Graben and Kärntner Straße is an experience in itself. Stroll through the Naschmarkt and soak up the scents, peek into the courtyards of the MuseumsQuartier, sit down for a moment on one of those colourful benches. You’ll see: experiencing Vienna mostly means walking through it.
One more tip from the neighbourhood
You don’t even have to head into the centre for „free and beautiful“. Right here in Hernals, the Schwarzenbergpark begins and flows straight into the Vienna Woods – pure nature, no admission at all.
